Do Employers Look at Online Degrees Differently Than Standard College

Employers will always prefer to hire the person most qualified for the job, or someone equipped with the proper skill set and training commensurate to the position. Now, since online degrees are gaining in popularity, employers can expect more and more prospective job applicants to be presenting online degrees. Should it make a difference whether the degree was acquired online, or through traditional methods?

In a recent study designed to see whether the method of delivery of learning caused substantial or significant difference, a small group of students coming from the same academic degrees, from both distance and residential programs, were compared based on specific competencies. Although all the participants performed well, those from the distance education programs displayed high marks in Technology, Quantitative skills, & Theory skills. In more practical terms, what this means is that although the education and learning levels achieved for distance education and traditional methods are somewhat identical, there appears to be a slight but significant difference, based on the delivery method. People who earned their degree through distance education will have acquired a skill set that apparently makes them focus more, while those who earned their degree through the traditional method will have acquired a skill set more suited to social and procedural learning processes.

Therefore, employers will have to consider those plus factors when evaluating online degrees versus standard college degrees knowing full-well that each delivery method has its own unique set of advantages, which will make the selection process just a little more complicated. Should those differences be important in the occupation applied for, then perhaps, the employer should look at online degrees differently, but in a positive light.

Employers should also consider that those who earned their online degree probably did it while being employed or while raising a family. For some, this will show that the prospective employee has the determination to finish something in spite of current obstacles. This single-minded pursuit of the goal of a diploma or a degree should also not be overlooked by the employer during the evaluation process.

Online degree holders will also probably have a bit more experience than the traditional degree holder, and this may be the factor that tips the weighing scale in their favor. Experience is certainly a valuable skill set that can only be earned through time. And life experience is also probably a top motivating factor for the person to have wanted to pursue an online degree in the first place.
